The Mullet

... was very fashionable and popular in the 1980s, as evidenced in its adoption by the celebrities listed here – to which we might add Ian Botham (and less notably, but arguably more definitively, Billy Ray Cyrus).

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (cited by Wikipedia), its demise came in the mid–1990s after the Beastie Boys used the terms "mullet" and "mullet head" as epithets in a 1994 song entitled Mullet Head. The term "mullet head" had previously been used to refer to a person of dubious intelligence, for example in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke.
